A History of Sin, A History of Grace (Pt 2) Nehemiah 9:1-38 (A History of Sin, A History of Grace) Part 2 Well good morning Cypress Bible Church. If you are joining us as a guest today we want to welcome you. Thank you for comIng to our church to worship with us. Today is not a normal Sunday for us. You may look around the room and notice that there is a of people wearing black this morning. Don’t worry, that is not a prerequisite for coming to church here. But there is a reason. Based on where we are in the study of the book of Nehemiah, those of us who call Cypress Bible Church our home have spent the week preparing for a service that is focused on prayer, repentance and confession. And here’s a reminder for us this morning. Repentance In the Bible is ALWAYS a function of seeing God’s goodness. Listen to: Romans 2:4 — …God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance. Repentance without a view of God’s kindness and goodness is unfruitful, does not lead to lasting change and usually amounts to little more than works based righteousness. We don’t want that. We want to see the goodness of God today and have that move us to repentance. Here is what we are going to do this morning. We will begin our service as we normally do and sing a couple songs. Then we are going to divide the message into thirds. First, CONFESSION. This will be the longest section. I’ll lead us through the first 1/3 of Nehemiah’s prayer and focus on the goodness of God Next to Israel’s Failure. And then we will then apply it to us in a call and response. That’s where I read a prepared confession and you respond that that confession. After that we will sing a couple songs that reflect on this confession. Next we will set up for COMMUNION which is the next 1/3 of our service. We will do a call and response as we setup that time, take communion and sing. The final 1/3 of our service will be a time of COMMITMENT. Repentance involves feeling but that’s not how it’s defined. It’s defined by doing differently. That’s at the heart of what repentance is. Because our HEART has changed our ACTIONS follow that. So let’s begin our time this morning with prayer. Confession: Review Of God’s Goodness (vs 1-16) So we begin our Service this morning with a time of confession. Last week we read the first 15 verses of Nehemiah’s prayer. And in this First part of his prayer, Nehemiah does one thing and one thing only: he recounts just how good God had been to the nation of Israel. In VERSES 5 and 6 he prayed, “God you alone are LORD. You Made the stars and the planets and the nebulae and the supernova and the 1 trillion galaxies and their billions of stars.” You made every living thing on p…
