The best analogy I’ve heard to describe emotions is that emotions are like the gauges on the dashboard of our cars. Think about what gauges do for you as a driver. If you are driving down the road and all of the sudden you see the low oil warning light turn on and your oil pressure drops to zero, you’d immediately pull over because those gauges are telling you that something is seriously wrong with the engine. Without those gauges you would have no idea that catastrophe was brewing beneath the hood. And in a similar way, emotions tell you what is going beneath the hood of our hearts. What is happening down there in the mysterious subterranean regions of the soul. Your emotions tell you. Identifying the emotion, reading the gauge so to speak, is the first step. I’m feeling angry. I’m feeling sad. I’m feeling joyful. Okay, that’s good. But the real work is interpreting it. What does that mean? What is it telling you? What is the appropriate action to take based on that reading? You see so often we don’t put enough time into asking the questions, “I feel depressed, but why? “I feel frustrated, but why?” What does that tell me about my heart? Here’s an interpretive key and if you have never noticed this about emotions, this will really help you to self-evaluate. What are your emotions telling you? Here’s the key: all human emotions are commenting in some way about how you relate to your TREASURE. So, in order to understand your emotions, you have to first understand what your treasure is. What do we mean by treasure? Deep in our hearts, we all chase something a treasure that determines our priorities, a treasure that fuels our decisions, a treasure that motivates us, It might be wealth, success, sex, praise of people, accomplishments, love, or security. That thing we believe will ultimately satisfy us is our treasure. And so emotions are indicators of how we relate to that treasure. So for example let’s say money is your treasure: When our treasure is taken away from us, we experience sorrow. When we acquire our treasure suddenly, we feel joy. When we sense a threat to our treasure, we feel fear. When we allow our treasure to fill our heart, we feel satisfied. When we see our treasure in the possession of another, we feel envy. When we lose our treasure through our own fault, we are consumed by regret When we are on the path toward our treasure, we feel hope. When we must defend our treasure, we find courage. When we share our treasure with another, we feel connection. When another helps us secure our treasure, we feel gratitude. When we see our treasure disrespected or corrupted, we feel anger.…
