A Psalm of Unity Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download Before we begin just a quick word about where we are going in our Sunday morning messages. We spent four weeks this summer going through Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible. And we learned about why we should love God’s Word. It is the Word of God that reveals the Person of God. And it is knowing the person of God that will ultimately bring us joy. The plan is to spend three more Sundays in the Psalms and then return to our study in 1 Timothy. So we finished the longest Psalm. Today we swing to the other end of the spectrum and we come to one of the shortest Psalms, Psalm 133 which is about one thing: Unity. That’s something we need. Because if there’s one thing we can all agree on: we don’t agree. It feels like every single day, from the moment we wake up and grab our phones, we’re being asked to do one thing: choose a side. Are you on the red team or the blue team? Watch this news channel and be against that one. Stand with this group and be against that one? Choose one side and demonize the other. The algorithms on our social media feeds are designed to figure out which camp we belong to, and then they dig the trench a little deeper, feeding us more of what we already agree with and showing us more reasons to be angry at, or afraid of, ‘the other side.’ We tend to believe that anyone who isn’t 100% for us must be 100% against us. Grace is seen as weakness. The simple act of listening has become a lost art. Civility, which is defined as the ability to listen and disagree while respecting the other person, has been completely lost. And if we’re being honest with ourselves, this spirit of division doesn’t just stay ‘out there’ on the internet or on our television screens. It seeps under our doors. It creates that unspoken tension at the Thanksgiving dinner table. It strains friendships we’ve had for years. And it finds its way into the Church – the one place on Earth that is meant to be a living, breathing demonstration of unity. So the question for us this morning is, what do we do? Is this just the way things are now? Do we just pick our side, dig in our heels, and get better at fighting? Or does the Gospel of Jesus Christ offer us a radically different way forward? A way that pulls together diversity, changes our values, by asking us to bow before a common Savior who came to tear down the very walls that divide us. So simple Psalm, simple outline. The Beauty of Unity, the Essence of Unity First the beauty. This is why we should pursue it! Why? Because it’s beautiful. It’s amazing. It’s life giving. This whole Psalm is largely given over to this point. Psalm 133:1A Song of Ascents. Of David. Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! ” Psalm 133:2…
