Acts 1:6-11 Resources for the Task: Power and Presence Acts 1:6-11 Resources for the Task: Power and Presence We are in a new series in the book of Acts which is really a book about the REMARKABLE story of the birth of the church. Regardless of what a person believes about Jesus and his life, everybody has to kind of stand back and be amazed at what happened here in the first century. Christianity took over the Roman empire. How did that happen? How did this outbreak of Christianity take place? There's actually a hint in the first verse. Remember from last week that this is Luke writing an orderly account for the most excellent Theophilus. This is part two of the LUKE-ACTS volume. And so he begins part two like this. Jesus BEGAN his work in the gospel of LUKE and it CONTINUES in the book of ACTS. But it continues in a very different way than most revolutions do. Revolutions by nature must start with big personalities but THE IDEAS of those revolutions have to be bigger than the person themselves otherwise it will collapse when they die. The IDEA has to be the thing that carries forward. The idea outlives the person. The claim of the book of Acts is quite different. The book of Acts begins by saying in the first book the work of Jesus began and the in this second book the work of Jesus continues. It continues in two ways. As we are going to see today, Jesus is resurrected and he promises to return. So there is more coming. There is a PART 3 that is yet to come. Because Jesus is LIVING, he can still affect history. No other world leader or religious leader who has died will come back and affect history. Their personal influence is 100% over. But Jesus will. So that's the first way his work continues. But secondly, and just as significantly, His Spirit is on earth and empowering his CHURCH to continue the work he started. It's not just his ideas that are working through society. He is empowering those ideas through the person of the Holy Spirit in his PEOPLE. And effectively what this does is massively increase the touch points of the gospel. When he was on earth he could only do his works through his one human body. That is part of what it means to be human is that you are limited by space and time to one location. But now that he is resurrected and now that the Spirit of God has come, he can now do it through millions of human bodies. We are his body. That's why we rightly say, that we are the hands and feet of Jesus. The ascension of Christ means that now he is present in us, AND ACTUALLY THROUGH US. This is why the gospel is ultimatley unstoppable. Ideas can be thwarted. Ideas can be handcuffed and tamped out. But God cannot. So what we are studying in the book of Acts is essesntially the most successful, greatest social reform EVER in the history o…
