Acts 2:1-4 The Birth of the Church: The Spirit’s Arrival Acts 2:1-4 The Birth of the Church: The Spirit’s Arrival Now I'm guessing you are thinking that what is going to happen in the next 35 minutes is that I am going to teach on the passage we just read. That's what we normally do, but that's not what we are going to do today. And here's the reason. The book of Acts is the location in God's Word where we are introduced to the incredible ministry of the Spirit of God as it relates to the church. And this is of incredible interest to us since it is the Spirit of God that empowers us to do spiritual ministry. We want to understand and be empowered by the Spirit. So naturally, you would think that since the book of Acts and the NT is where the bulk of the teaching on this subject occurs that the most natural thing in the world would be to START our study in these places. We will get there for sure, but we can't start there but STARTING THERE would be a mistake, a HUGE one. Why? You have to approach the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts like an OT Jew. When you say the Spirit of God to an OT Jew they were DEFINITELY THINKING SOMETHING? And it MOST CERTAINLY is NOT what you think of as a NT believer. I can prove it to you. Do you remember in Ps 51, David is repenting of his sin with Bathsheba and he prays, "God take not your Holy Spirit from me." When you hear that, you get all sorts of confusing signals in your brain. Your thinking salvation, since we get the Holy Spirit at the moment of Salvation. That is NOT AT ALL what David is thinking. You'll see that by the end of today. We have to remember, the disciples of Jesus are OT Jews. What was normal for them? What we experience today and what is normal for us today in terms of the Spirit of God has not always been the case. So our goal for today will be to look ONLY at the Old Testament and ask the question, "What was the ministry of God's Spirit in the OT? And the reason we are doing that is so that we can understand what incredible NEW THING was introduced in the book of Acts. What actually changed? Obviously the Holy Spirit in the form of the third person of the trinity existed in the OT. Obviously the Spirit of God had a ministry in the OT. But equally as obvious, something changed. And understanding what that SOMETHING was and understanding what is specifically available to us today that was NOT available to them in the OT will help utilize this incredible gift God has given to us. So let's begin with a 30k foot view. Statistics You can learn a lot from just looking at how the word Spirit is Used in the OT vs the NT. Let's start by asking the question, how many times is the word Spirit used in the OT and NT. What makes this somewhat tricky is that In Hebrew and also in Greek btw, the w…
