Acts 2:14-21 | Explaining Pentecost: The Prophetic Word Acts 2:14-21 | Explaining Pentecost: The Prophetic Word Introduction Today we get to dive into this incredible text. We have spent two weeks setting this up. Why? Because we always need to approach our Bible with a very specific question. We NEVER start reading our Bible asking - What does this TEXT mean to me? Instead, WE ALWAYS ask the question, "Want did this text mean to the original readers?" And then we take that meaning, derive principals and apply it to us. But we MUST start with the question, "What did it mean to them?" And the ONLY way we can understand how the original recipients of the book of ACTS would have experienced pentecost would be to understand how the OT SAINT thought about the ministry of the Holy Spirit and how the OT Saint thought about Pentecost? Keep in mind, everyone standing there on that day were OT Saints. So just by way of review, we said there's about 100 verses in the OT that speak of the Spirit of God. 60% of the OT texts that speak of the Spirit describe how the Spirit worked in the experience of the OT saint. It was VERY different than how he works today and so we belabored that point just a bit. We said the ministry of the Spirit of God in the OT was three things: We also looked at a second set of texts. The remaining 40% of the texts speak of a future work of the Spirit. And a lot of what we looked at last week was how that future work of the Spirit was connected with the coming Messiah. We said in the minds of OT Jews the equation was simple. Messiah Comes; Spirit Comes; Kingdom Comes. All those concepts were linked together in sequence. And for understandable reason. What's New Now what we introduced last week and we really want to build on this week is that the promises made to Israel in the OT ARE GOING TO BE FULFILLED, BUT in a way that was not able to be foreseen by the OT saint. EVERY promise of God is going to be fulfilled, but the timing of that fulfillment is different than what they thought. We touched on this for just a second last week and I want to build it out so it's a little more evident what we are talking about. Let me try to create in you some sympathy for what the disciples were going through. What are we all looking forward to in terms of our end times calendar? We are looking forward to the coming of Jesus Christ where we believe he will reign here on earth. You have been taught to look forward to a rapture, and a tribulation and a 1000 year kingdom. But what if Jesus returned and said, "I don't fault you for thinking that. In fact I commend you because that's what I told you would happen. And it will happen. But I'm going to reveal further how. There's going to be a third coming. And I know you could have not foreseen that but here's…
