Angels and Demons Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download Introduction Good morning Cypress Bible Church, we are in a series where we are teaching 12 “major areas of theology. Last week John Perez so helpfully led us through the doctrine of man. And now today we are going to study what the Scriptures say about angels. I remember when I first saw a section in a doctrinal statement on angels, I thought that kind of seems like a fringe area of theology to focus on. Why would we dedicate a whole section of our doctrinal statement to that? But you know what, it’s not fringe at all. It’s everywhere. Here’s a chart that shows the hundreds of occurances of just the word angel divided up by book; it shows up in nearly every book; you can see it’s a massive theme, especially in the book of Revelation. Not only is it referenced frequently, apparently, it’s a pretty significant part of his creation. Sometime’s it’s asked, how many angels did he create? We do have a biblical answer to that question. LOTS. A couple of verses that speak to this. Do you remember when Jesus was before Pilate he says do you not realize that I could speak to my father and at once 12 legions of angels would be dispatched to help me. That would be like 60,000. And presumably that is a fraction of the available angelic resources based on Rev 5 Revelation 5:11, “Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands,” myriad means countless. So there a LOT of angels. It’s significant. Let’s jump right into the first sentence of our doctrinal statement on angels. This first sentence is a truth claim. Here it is: Angels are spiritual beings occupying different orders and ranks who are created to serve and worship God. Now this sentence is a claim about the fabric of reality. Something is being claimed here about what is real. And the claim is that there is a SPIRITUAL realm in which angels and demons exist. It is a realm that is invisible to us and yet it somehow influences us. Now what do you think about this claim? What do you think most people today think about this claim? Rudolph Bultman lived at the beginning of the 20th century and he wrote a book entitled Kerygma and Myth and in that book he called upon the church to get with the program. He essentially said, listen guys we live in a modern world. We live in a world of radio networks, and satellites, and nuclear power and particle accelerators. What place could the Bible possibly have in our modern world? If it’s going to have any relevance whatsoever, we need to de-mythologize the Bible. The Bible contains truth, to be sure, but it also contains mythology and we need to separate them out. We need to look at the Bibl…
