David’s Son and Lord Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download You might be thinking, wow, only three verses for today’s message. Why are we spending an entire sermon on three verses. Well, the first thing to say is, be thankful, because it can get worse. Just kidding, the reason is because Jesus is quoting Psalm 110, which turns out, is an unbelievably important Psalm in our Bibles. You might not realize it, but this Psalm is quoted in the NT more than any other OT passage, by a long shot. It’s quoted or alluded to over 23 times. Here are some of the main places. So our goal today is to really inspect this Psalm and see why it is so significant. Now let’s set the context for our passage this week and why it gets quoted the way it does. Last week we looked at the startling reality that EVEN WISE people can become FOOLS. How? By REJECTING the power of God, the Word of God and the love of God. But the inverse of this is also true. FOOLISH people can become WISE by CONFESSING the power of God, the Word of God and the love of God. So here’s a question. If confessing the power, word and love of God makes us wise, why would anyone not do that? The answer is because of SIN which distorts our thinking and causes us to see GOD as a threat. Here’s a metaphor I think helpful. I was recently reading about rabies. Rabies is pretty rare in our part of the world but it’s a pretty serious disease if untreated. Rabies is a VIRUS that is usually transmitted through the bite or saliva of an infected animal (dogs, bats, raccoons, etc.). Once in the body, the virus attaches to nerve cells near the bite site. The virus travels along peripheral nerves toward the brain. This process can take weeks to months, depending on how far the bite is from the brain. Interestingly, the nature of the disease is that it bypasses the immune system during this phase. Once it reaches the brain, rabies causes brain inflammation, leading to these severe neurological symptoms: there’s this incredible anxiety, agitation, hallucinations, confusion. But what usually kills the victim is dehydration because they are actually terrified of water. They resist water in the way a healthy person would resist poison. To swallow is super painful and their mind and body just rejects it. Now, I mention this, because rabies as a physical virus is a pretty good metaphor for sin which, in many ways, is a spiritual virus which has very similar effects. One of the defining marks of those under the influence of sin is that they reject the VERY THING that they NEED the very most. They see the life giving person of Jesus Christ, the fountain of living water, as an enemy to fear, to resist, to reject and oppose. They hallucinate. They are delusional. They feel threatened by his beautiful, restorative, healing…
