Divorce & Remarriage Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download CBC Position on Divorce & Remarriage Introduction Well, today, we come to the subject of divorce and remarriage. By way of introduction to the message, what I’m sharing this morning is not just my personal opinion. This sermon is a collective effort of about two months of work on the part of the elders. Knowing this sermon was approaching, we’ve done a lot of work trying to study the Scriptures. We’ve read over 800 pages of material trying to get our minds around what the Bible says in this regard. And the reason we did so much work on this is that there is a lot of confusion in our culture on this issue – not just our culture but our Christian evangelical culture. A lot. And it’s tempting when there is a lot of debate around an issue to ignore it. But IGNORING difficult things is rarely, if ever, the right course of action. Pressing into difficult things is almost always where real growth happens. And this is no exception. But beyond that, we wanted to provide clear, biblical answers to real people in real situations who are genuinely asking, “What should I do?” We didn’t want to say, “Well, there’s a lot of debate out there. We don’t want tlui;]o8lp[lp[8olopop=looluiiiio touch on this controversial issue, so we don’t have a position. Hope you figure it out.” No, our goal is to produce a position paper that includes a FAQ section to address the many important practical considerations that arise. That is in process, and we will let you know when it’s complete. Let’s begin by acknowledging that in the room today, we have a wide representation of situations. We have people who have never been married and perhaps want to get married someday. That’s great! Marriage is wonderful. Here, we have people who are happily married. We have people who have been divorced, and they wonder if the divorce was sinful. We have people who have been divorced and are wondering if they can get married again. We have people who have been divorced and have been remarried, and maybe you are wondering if that was acceptable in God’s eyes. We have people in the room who are married right now and would like to get a divorce, and you are wondering if getting a divorce would be a sin. All that is here today. It’s not an easy subject to tackle in a single message. And it’s not just hard to articulate from up here, I know very much that it’s hard to listen to down there. Why? Because I know for certainty that every person in this room has been hurt by a divorce – either in your family or your network of friends, or your extended family’s experience. I have in my own family and among very close friends divorce situations. As a pastor, I’ve sat through dozens of these heart-wrenching stories. I know how c…
