And I’m sure this was a great encouragement to young Timothy because it validated his feelings of being unfairly discriminated against because of his age. In all likelihood he was twice as mature as some of these older men but was being treated as if he were a kid. That’s not a fun feeling. It’s not fun to have to fight for your right to be heard and respected for who you actually are. And I’m sure it felt very validating to Timothy to have the heavyweight apostle Paul in his corner. And Paul encourages Timothy. Be a lion. Be brave. Be bold. Stand up for the truth. Don’t let anyone look down on you because of your age. Get out and do the work of an EVANGELIST. Be busy about the work of ministry. Go, Timothy, Go! Preach the Word. Now it may be the case that as Paul pushes his way away from the table and thinks about what he just said, he now reflects, “I better not leave it at just that.” And Paul may have thought, “You know, Timothy may be in danger of doing what many young men do, Great, I’ve been given authority! Great I have been validated. Great I am excited to do ministry! Let’s push, let’s press on and clean up this doctrinal mess. Let’s move forward and reach the lost for Christ. We want revival in this church and city. Let’s do this! And that zeal is good and commendable and hear this – should not be squelched. But, in all that zeal, don’t forget the people. Don’t forget to shepherd PEOPLE. It’s easy to run over people and crush them without realizing it or meaning to. No Timothy, you’ve got to care for people along the way. Programs vs People One of the reasons that caring about people is very difficult is because people are very different and have very different needs. And so in this passage Paul talks about how to care for four different groups of people in the church. Older Men, Younger Men, Older Women and Younger Women Now let me just state the obvious. These groups of people are very different. Men vs Women Take for example the simple difference between men and women. That difference is real. God has made us different. And if we RESPECT that difference, you are going to feel the tension which is a good thing. Every marriage in the world feels this tension. I remember when my wife and I first go married we were dirt poor and we needed a couch for our living room. And so we were driving along on this dirt road in the mountains in my four seater Mazda 323 sedan and low and behold there was a couch sitting on the side of the road. So I said,…
