God’s Call For Men & Women Part 1 Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download Introduction For the next two weeks we dive into a challenging section of God’s Word to both interpret and apply: the roles of men and women in the church. The battle lines are fierce. There is much disagreement in the church, today. Now I think it’s important to say up front, there has not always been disagreement. Modern interpretations are somewhat of a historical anomaly. In fact, for almost 2000 years, there was universal agreement in the church on what this passage taught and it’s application to men and women’s roles. But things have changed. Now days, it’s very common to have women elders, ordained women senior pastors women giving the Sunday morning message. And maybe you are asking the question, “Why can’t women do everything men can do in the church and home. Why not?” All those women teaching pastors out there have done all sorts of great work for the kingdom. There are so many people who have testimonies of being saved under women lead pastors and teachers. Plus there are so many men pastors who are total losers. Why should we have to put up with this? Plus, so many women feel called to ministry. Why are we limiting what God has put on their heart? How can you say that women are equal when we won’t let them serve as elders or teachers in the church? How is that equality? So given these arguments, why isn’t this debate over? One of the primary ones is the one in front of us today. God’s Word is Good. So this is our task: What do these words mean? I didn’t write those words. You didn’t write those words. We are a Bible church which claims that these are God’s Words. They have to mean something. And here’s the controversial part: 1 Timothy 2:11-12 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.” It’s not lost on me that to our modern sensibilities, these words are offensive to many in the room. In fact, when I first read these words 30 years ago, I was appalled. I made it a mission in my life to try and defend women from these verses in the Bible. These words cannot mean what it seems like they are saying. And that’s a possibility. PERHAPS the REASON THEY ARE OFFENSIVE is because the face value reading is not the proper interpretation. Perhaps what it SEEMS to be saying is not what it is ACTUALLY saying and when we understand what it’s ACTUALLY saying, we would NO LONGER be offended. But as followers of Christ, we must be careful. We cannot come to…
