It’s in the news, it’s in our home, it’s in our heart. We could categorize evil under three headings. There’s the evil that’s outside of us: Hamas and Isis, Hezbollah, Child trafficking, political corruption, corporate corruption. We’re aware of it. Then there’s the evil around us: This is the evil that affects our relationships: being unfairly treated by your boss, being unfairly accused, abuse, your spouse having an affair, unkind words said to you, words of hate, withholding affection. Then there’s the evil within us: pride, jealousy of what someone else has, lusting after another man or woman, unrighteous anger toward your kids, coveting the possessions of someone else, coveting another man’s wife. Here’s the real practical question: How do we combat evil? How do we overcome evil? What do we do about it? That’s the subject of today’s passage. How do we deal with the evil in our experience – outside us, around us, in us. Well, today we are going to talk about 3 things we CAN’T do and then 3 things we CAN do. Here’s the first thing you can’t do. You can’t escape it. Have you ever had an experience where you have had way too much screentime. You just waste way too much time binge watching some TV series or doom scrolling on your phone or you are watching your kids waste their life on video games and you just see how worthless this little device is. And so your mind goes into problem solving mode and you are so fed up with it all and you think, you know what we need to do? We need to become Amish. We need to make a little commune on 10,000 acres with a giant fence and we outlaw all electronics and computers and we just work the land with pitchforks and milk goats like the good old days and we sit down for meals together and we love each other. What if you did that? What if you actually pulled that off? What would that experiment produce? Here’s the answer. You might for a brief period of time experience some really good fruit, but here’s the problem. First, you you���ve haven’t done a thing to solve the evil outside of you. You’re less exposed to it, but you haven’t solved it. It still exists. The evil inside of you is still there and guess what that’s going to crop up in the evil around you in your relationships. It always finds a way. I remember reading about Amish communities. The teen girls had to adhere to a very strict dress code and the rational was that okay that will curb the vanity associated with young girls. But you know what they started realizing. The one area they had freedom, which was the pocket on the top of their dress they started making really ornate and elaborate pat…
