How to Influence Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download Introduction Last week we talked about the miracle that that the Bible actually gives us hope that we can change. It really is a miracle. We are not doomed to live under some label. You have attention deficit disorder? You are not doomed. You can change! You are an angry man? You are not a slave to that. You can change! Are you fixated on how people perceive you? You can change! Are you overcome with worry? You can change. That’s a large claim? How do we do this? How? We talked about the three step process from Ephesians 4. Take off the old Renew the mind and Put on the new That is how we invite the Spirit of God to change us. Now, here’s a related question. Okay, we talked about what we need to DO in order to change ourselves. What do we need to DO to change others? Can we even change other people? You want to talk about a daunting task! I can barely change myself. What do I need to DO to be an AGENT of change for someone else? What do I need to DO? Now let’s just start out by acknowledging that asking, “What do I need to DO?” is the wrong question. We are conditioned from the time we are 2 years old to think that the answer to everything is more DOING. We are conditioned to believe that it is our DOING that changes things. It’s our DOING that matters. What is the most common question a kid gets asked from adults? “What are you going to DO when you grow up.” In other words, you significance will be determined by what you DO. You become effective in the world when you DO. Effectiveness equals DOING. And so graduate from high school. And your just panicked. What am I going to DO? So maybe you enter the workforce or maybe you go to college. What am I going to DO? You get married and you think what do I need to DO to become a good husband or wife? What do I need to DO to become a good father? That’s how we are programmed. So its very natural that when it comes to this question of how do we become an agent of change for other people, we snap right into this mode of DOING. Yes, tell me what I need to DO to help my son or daughter whose rebellious and off the rails. Yes, tell me what I need to DO to change my spouse who is abusive or who does not care for the kids. Yes, tell me what I need to DO to change my friend who is killing himself or herself. Here’s the shocking reality of this passage. You don’t change the world by DOING. You change the world by BEING. Here’s the message Paul has to Timothy. Timothy you want to change the world? You want to change people’s minds? You want to change what they love? You want to change how people feel? You want to change what they value? You change others by changing yourself. You BE first and it will BE that BEING that CHANGES other people. Listen, I ju…
