John 19:30 · Jesus' Passion. Jesus’ 6th Statement — sermon from Cypress Bible Church on BibleSlides.

Jesus’ 6th Statement It… is… finished. What powerful words. But what do they really mean? Yesterday, we watched the video on the phrase, “I thirst.” It’s important to look at the verse leading up to that moment. John 19:28 says, “After this, Jesus, knowing that ALL THINGS WERE NOW ACCOMPLISHED, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, ‘I thirst.’” Now let’s move just a little further… John 19:30: “When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished!’ And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” Earlier this week, in Tim Weaver’s lesson, he said something that really stuck with me: “‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ is not the cry of God abandoning Jesus… It’s the cry we have been voicing since the beginning—when mankind first fell into sin.” “The Beginning”… That perspective hit me as I thought about Jesus’ words in this context: “It is finished.” And how that is directly related to the end of His time on Earth… It made me think all the way back to His birth, and how God’s perfect timing always brings everything together in only the way He can. Now if you’re like me, you find the concept of time in the Bible fascinating and very important. Let me show you what I mean… · John 1:1 – “En Arche” – In the beginning was the Word… · Galatians 4:4 – “Pleroma” – In the fullness of time, God sent His Son… · John 12:23-24 and 17:1 – “Hora erchomai” – The hour has come… · John 19:30 – “Tetelestai” – It is finished. Mission complete. · Romans 5:6 – “Kairon” – At just the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. So… what exactly was finished? Simply put: His mission. What was that mission? 1. To seek and save the lost. (Luke 19:10) 2. To provide atonement for the sins of all who would believe. (Hebrews 10:10,12) 3. To defeat sin and death. (Ephesians 2:5) And how did He accomplish that? 1. By living in perfect obedience to the will of the Father. (John 6:38) 2. By fulfilling every one of the more than 300 Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah. How do we know this mission was truly completed? Well, Jesus tells us—in John 17—just before He’s arrested. It’s known as the High Priestly Prayer. He says: 1. “The hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify You.” (V1) 2. “You’ve given me authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given me.…” (V2) 3. “I glorified You on Earth by finishing the work You gave me to do.” (V4) 4. “I have manifested Your name to the people who you gave me out of the world.” (V6) 5. “I have given them the words that You gave me.”(V8 &14) So… what does all this mean for us—today? One of my all-time favorite movies is The Empire Strikes Back. There’s this classic scene where Yoda says to Luke: “Do or do not… there is no try.” And I wonder if maybe-just maybe- we could s…
