Jesus’ 7th Statement

Luke 23:46 · 2025-04-18 · William Michael · 7 Statements From The Cross

Luke 23:46 · Jesus' Passion. Jesus’ 7th Statement — sermon from Cypress Bible Church on BibleSlides.

Jesus’ 7th Statement “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” It is written Jesus said this loudly from the cross, with his dying breaths he cried loudly this prayer to the Father. He echoed Psalm 31:5 in this cry. This Psalm was taught to Jewish children as a bedtime prayer, “Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, Lord, my faithful God.” Similar to our “Now I lay down to sleep, pray the Lord my soul to keep.” How many times had Jesus prayed this before bed growing up? I encourage you to meditate on Psalm 31 as we look towards Easter but to summarize, it is about God being one’s refuge, rescue, deliverer. Even on the cross, Jesus was confident in God as his refuge, rescue, deliverer. Do you have that same confidence? One thing he adds to the prayer from the original Psalm is the first word, Father. He brings the mighty & faithful Lord near with the trusted relational position of Father. It is only by this nearness, this relationship, that one can trust God enough to die on a cross. We see in the garden Jesus ask for another option but above all he ask that his Father be glorified. He trusts his father even from the cross, into and thru death. And by doing so he opens up to all of us this same relationship. Because of the cross we can now also cry Father you keep my soul. If you don’t know God as your father I would encourage you to reach out to one of the pastors or elders and ask “how does this work, I want to know God as my father”. Their contact info will be in the description. ( contact a pastor) And if you do know God as your father, you trust him with your soul, ask yourself “what area of my life do I not trust God?” Do I trust as long as my bank account says this much, have I committed my finances into my father’s hands? Maybe it is your family or your singleness, Do I trust God with those? Your job or your college degree, do I trust God with that? Do I trust God when the doctors say … If you want to draw near to God as your Father, ask him (as Jesus did in the garden) glorify your name Father in my life. Psalm 31:3 says “Since you are my rock and my fortress for the sake of your name lead and guide me.” This is not a prayer for a comfortable life, it is a prayer that leads to a cross, it is a prayer that leads to new life one of greatest intimacy with God and ultimate fulfillment. A life of trust that can cry loudly from any situation, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!”
