Jesus Understands Heartbreak Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download Call to Worship Some 450 to 500 years prior to Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem, the prophet Zechariah had prophesied the event we now call Palm Sunday: “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! / Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! / See, your king comes to you, / righteous and victorious, / lowly and riding on a donkey, / on a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9). The prophecy was fulfilled in every particular as Jerusalem welcomed Jesus as their King. Israel was under the thumb of Rome and the people cried out Hosanna which means “Save Us.” They wanted political redemption. What they needed was spiritual redemption. They identified the proper savior. The misidentified the problem. 2000 years later we understand what Jesus came to do. He came to save us from the power and penalty of sin. But we, like the people are awaiting the final act. And so we too cry out Hossana. Save us. Introduction Today is Palm Sunday where we remember Jesus’ riding into Jerusalem on a donkey to the shouts of people saying “Hossana” Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. We call it the triumphal entry. TRIUMPH. People are laying down palm branches and their garments. They are quoting Psalm 118. Thats what the crowds are doing. They are welcoming Jesus as King. Their commitment to Jesus was as shallow as water on a plate. Their real allegiance was not to Jesus; it was to themselves. In as much as Jesus was useful they they were on board but as soon as Jesus lays some demands upon them, that same crowd, five days later is going to be shouting “Crucify Him, Crucify Him.” And what we are going to consider both in the triumphal entry AND in Mark 3 is what that would have FELT LIKE to Jesus. What does it feel like to be betrayed and to have people you trust suddenly turn on you? And what we will discover is that Jesus is intimately acquainted with the grief of abandonment. Jesus understands heartbreak. He has wrestled with those bitter feelings at all levels of human relationship, from the fickle crowds, to his disciples scattering, to Peter, to Judas, to even his own family. I know there are many in the room, perhaps all, who have been deeply hurt by someone in your life who betrayed you, cheated on you, lied to you, turned on you, deeply misunderstood you or even abandoned you. There is help for you here today. The Superman Syndrome In order for us to appropriately appreciate the passage in front of us, we need to take some time to consider the nature of the God-man Jesus Christ. This is not an easy subject to just quic…
