Now as you admire this piece of machinery, let me ask you some questions Is this machine effective? Is it working or broken? Does it help you? What would happen if this did not exists? You can answer none of these questions unless you know what it was designed to do. It turns out this is the babbage machine or what was also called a difference engine which is considered to be the first mechanical calculator designed in 1822. As soon as you know the design, you can begin to assess it. If I asked you does it work? Because you know the design, you could test it. You could put in 5+4 and if the answer was 9 you’d say, “It’s doing what it was designed to do.” You have to know the design to answer the question is it doing what it’s supposed to do. So let’s turn the question on us. Are we doing what we are supposed to do? Are we operating according to our design? You might say, “I’m working toward financial freedom. That’s what I’m doing.” Okay, fine, but is that what you were designed to do? I’m raising my kids. Okay fine, but is that what you are designed to do? At the most basic level, why were we created? What are we designed to do? Human beings are designed by God, inherently, as part of our DNA, to be most happy when we behold glorious things. Being made in the image of God means we are designed to live for glory. That’s what will always makes us most happy. And since God is the most glorious being in the universe, living for him is the only thing that will make us happy. This is the first question in the Westminster Catechism: what is the chief end of man? In other words, what is our purpose? To enjoy God and Glorify Him Forever. Here’s the problem. Because of sin, this innate desire to pursue glory has become misdirected. Instead of seeking the glory of God, we often seek our own glory, striving for personal recognition, success, or the validation of others. Last week we talked about money. Money has glory and that’s why people pursue it. Because we all of these lesser forms of glory are too small for our desires, it leads to dissatisfaction because it cannot fulfill the deep longing for significance that only God can satisfy. That’s the cause of almost every problem we see in the world. The great battles of the world are really glory battles. It’s what’s behind every argument in the kitchen, every power move in the work place, it’s behind every political battle every military battle. We want GLORY. That has a lot of explaining power in terms of our behavior. Now in the text today we are going to see three contrasting approaches to glory. We are going to see Jesus pursuing the father’…
