When you are present, evil cannot abide; In your fellowship is fullness of joy, Beneath your smile is peace of conscience, By your side no fears disturb, no apprehensions banish rest of mind. Nothing exceeds your power, Nothing is too great for you to do, Nothing too good for you to give, Infinite is your might, boundless your love, limitless your grace, glorious your saving name. Amen. Introduction Well we are making our way through the gospel of Mark. And Jesus is presenting himself to the people as their long awaited Messiah. And most of what you have in the book of Mark is various reactions to that. You have little windows showing us the types of ways in which people reacted to that claim. And today we have this unique window into the way in which his hometown received him. And what we are going to discover is that the human heart has a way of trying to preserve itself, to defend itself against things that make self look ugly. Compared to the prefallen version, our souls are hideous. Our souls are appalling. They are so disfigured. They are warped inward to focus on self. They are so disinterested in God and others. Now none of us have a very strong awareness of this. In fact, we may never had known it at all were it not for the fact that you were handed a mirror in the form of the Word of God. Jesus Christ comes into the world as says, “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” “The wages of sin is death.” What? Are you kidding? Jesus Christ is the mirror. Now what are we going to do? If we really stare in that mirro, if we really look, if we peek at ourselves through cracked fingers at that image of self, we would be horrified. What are we going to do with the ugliness of what we have just seen. What do you mean I’m sinful? Remember Saul in the OT? God commands Saul, through the prophet Samuel, to completely destroy the Amalekites and all their possessions. However, Saul disobeys by sparing King Agag and the best of the livestock. And then Samuel says, “What is the bleating of sheep I hear? What is the…
