Nehemiah 1:1-11 · Repentance. Nehemiah’s Burden — sermon from Cypress Bible Church on BibleSlides.

Nehemiah’s Burden Final Sermon In literature there is something called an anticlimax. It is the literary equivalent of climbing a mountain, expecting a breathtaking view at the summit, and finding a parking lot. In music this would be like a chord of dissonance that never gets resolved. An anticlimax denies you the satisfaction of a resolution. You follow along with the character development, you work and get emotionally invested, you work to follow the plot, and you think this whole thing is going somewhere only to lead to a non-dramatic ending. Slide 1: Image Slide 1 Slide type: image Today we begin a new book in a study of Nehemiah and the entire book is really an anticlimax similar to what I just described. There is excitement, there is some bright fall color moments of hope, there is true revival that sparks, but there are also some really disappointing non victories, some ugly sin, and stalled out dreams. And you might be thinking to yourself, what kind of book study is that? Happy New Year to you too?! I want a book study that shows me how to crush it in life, how to move mountains, and blow through obstacles and win. Here’s why this book has so much value. Two reasons: first, this is true to life. Many of us are just plain tired of the worn out promises that life is pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The reality is this world is broken by sin and no matter how much we try, we cannot reverse the curse. We need the curse-reverser to do that. The longer you live the more you realize that life is full of disappointments, some victories, some growth, lots of failure. So Nehemiah has value because it’s true to life. But far more important than that, what it teaches us is that man will at times be obedient and at times disobedient. And he will suffer for his disobedience and be rewarded for his obedience but there is an entire sphere of operation in which God works that is entirely above and beyond and outside of all of that and yet working through it. The providential hand of God is ALWAYS tirelessly at work because he must keep his promises to his people. And I’m telling you, to begin to trust in the providential, sovereign hand of our good God is one of the most comforting things in all the world. In the book of Nehemiah we see some great spiritual awakenings, some genuine revival, but we also see the limits of human reform and the underwhelming achievements of man. So its an anticlimax in terms of man’s effort but, I’m going to coin a word here, it’s a supraclimax in terms of Gods. Here’s what I mean by supraclimax. Supra is the prefix that means above and beyond. So for example. You have the natural. And then you have the supra natural. That’s acknowledging that God works not contrary to the l…
