Would you not agree? What could possibly more important than that? One of the basic tenants of theology is that we could never know God unless he chose to reveal himself. And that makes sense if we think about it because how could we know him? Where would we go to inquire about him. What if he existed in some galaxy far away? Or in another dimension? We are so limited. God must make the first move. In theology there are two ways in which God has made that first move. We call the first general revelation. General revelation refers to the ways in which God has generally made himself knowable to all people by virtue of the created order. In other words, what is possible to DEDUCE about God by observing just CREATION? So let’s just try this. I’ll give you three images and you tell me what you might be able to deduce about God from general revelation. You might say God is brilliant, variety, powerful, organized and orderly, creative, a lover of beauty. Those would be things you might be able to deduce. But are you sure? Here are three more. How would you describe God based on those photos? You see, general revelation only gets us so far. What is God like? We need more. Special revelation refers to the way in which God has revealed himself to us through his WORD, through the Bible. There are sentences in this book that describe God. We might be tempted to conclude that God is evil since there is suffering in the world. But we are told that it is in fact the result of sin. That’s special revelation. We wouldn’t know that if God hadn’t told us. And that makes our Bible’s a very special kind of book. There are many books in the world. Some are much greater than others. But the BIBLE is not a book greater in DEGREE than all other books. The BIBLE is a book of a completely different KIND. It’s revelation from God. Now, here’s why we start with that. We are in the book of Mark which is part of this special WORD revelation. If the most noble endeavor in the world, is to KNOW God, and WORD revelation is the best way to get to know God, well, fasten your seatbelts because according to John 1:14 the WORD becomes FLESH. You want to know God? Then get to know his Son. Get to know Jesus. He is the image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15). Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.” Colossians 1:19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,” Hebrews 1:3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the u…
