Prayer for the Lost Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download So we are in our study of 1 Timothy where Paul is instructing the young pastor Timothy on how to conduct himself in the household of God. He’s giving him instruction on how to organize the church. And in many ways these are kind of like the basics. These are the fundamentals. Fundamentals Nobody is thrilled by the fundamentals. Fundamentals are not usually exhilarating. But here’s the thing: it’s impossible to experience the exhilarating without the mastery of the fundamentals. For example, every musician wants to write a song that is number one on the charts and sells a million records and performs at sold out stadiums. But in order to do that, he first needs to nail scales, chords, and rhythm. They need to listen to that cursed metronome for hours and hours and hours. You’ve got to master the fundamentals. Every writer wants to write the next NY Times bestseller. But they’ll never do that without first nailing strong grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary. That’s all non-negotiable. You’ve got to master the fundamentals. In sports, everyone wants to be the next Steph Curry or LeBron but you can’t be that without first getting really good at dribbling, passing, and shooting. You can’t skip the fundamentals. But even how I’ve framed that isn’t really even correct. It’s not that these top performers had to first learn the fundamentals and then they were able to perform. It’s the mastery of the fundamentals that is the performance. It’s the artful application of the fundamentals that so captures our attention. Now all that to say, we come today to the Christian FUNDAMENTAL of prayer. This is like dribbling for the basketball player. This is like chords and scales for the musician. This is like punctuation to the writer. This is so basic and something we NEVER get over. In fact, it’s the mastery of this fundamental and the skillful application of this fundamental that is the performance of the Christian life. Context. Now HOW this fundamental fits into the book of 1 Timothy is kind of important to see. Paul sees his main job as a follower of Christ as TWO THINGS: to PROCLAIM and PROTECT the gospel. He wants to see people saved so he has these two really important jobs. Protect and Proclaim. Two wings of an airplane. Those are both important because the inverse of these, represent two ways that people can be lost. The first way is for them to not know the gospel. They are lost because they do not know the truth so we have to tell it to them. Hence, if we care about lost people, we have to proclaim. The second way for people to be lost is if they think they have the gospel but in fact do not. They are deceived. The gospel has been distorted into something that no longer saves. So if…
