Pure Defilement Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO KEEP THE LAW. – it’s about receiveing grace. Introduction We live in a day and age where the concept of guilt and being somehow unclean or defiled is a thing of the past, an ideological relic. We don’t talk about guilt like we used to. And this is very much linked to the secularization of our culture. Guilt is a function of breaking a moral law. Where do we get the moral law? Well the law comes from God. But if there really is no God, then there really is no law and if there is no law then there is no guilt. So that’s why the concept has disappeared. And for the secularist this is a great victory. Now that I can be free of all that moral oppression I can do whatever I want and not feel guilt or shame. But, the Bible teaches according to Romans 2:15 that God has written his law upon our hearts. Now if that is true, then you can’t really escape it. You might tamp it out over here, but it’s going to spring up over here. We are always trying to prove ourselves in some way. We all have a sense, even us, even now, that we’re unworthy, that we are unclean. There’s the old saying that says if you really want to know whose benefiting from a given situation what do you do? You follow the money. Well, when it comes to guilt, if you really want to find out what a person thinks will atone for their sins, what will save them their guilt, follow the effort. If you really want to know what a person believes will give them worth, give them value, meaning, identity. Follow the effort. It could be athletics, or their appearance, or their work. It could even be really good thing, the way you serve at church, how committed of a mom or dad you are, how faithful a minister of the gospel you are. I must do this thing or else I’m nothing…. I must be beautiful in this way or I’m nothing… I must perform like this or have kids like this or have a spouse like this or I’m nothing…. These are all ways in which we try establish our worth and atone for our guilt. But the universal testimony of every one who ever lives, is you cannot quiet the voice within. We can never outrun that nagging sense that we are somehow unclean. And consequen…
