Sanctification Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download Introduction As a parent, we often find that our expectations for our kids exceeds their expectations for themselves. For example, when my kids were young, like every kid, they had to learn their multiplication tables. And that takes a long time. It’s hard to do. It’s never very fun. They never want to do it. It hurts the brain. And so we work at it and work at it. And finally they get it! And it’s great for the kid but it’s really great for the parent. So we celebrate and high five; and I remember one of my kids saying, “I am so happy I finally finished with math.” And all of the sudden, I’m thinking, “Houston we have a problem.” I was like, bro, you haven’t even started math. They are picturing freedom and I’m picturing the rigorous path to Calculus 3 and Differential equations. And there’s that moment when you have to break it to em. And there’s this huge let down and DISAPPOINTMENT because there is this EXPECTATION GAP = This GAP between my kids GOAL for themselves and my goal for them. Now take that principle into our Christian growth. What expectations do you have for your Christian growth? Compare that to God’s expectations for you. Most of us have pretty low expectations. Okay, sure, I’m not perfect. But I’m doing pretty good. I’m gonna work on chipping off a few more rough edges. But honestly, I’ve done a lot. I’ve memorized the major verses. I serve. I’ve been at this a while. I’m pretty good compared to a lot of people, okay. When God hears us saying that sort of stuff he’s like, “Houston, we have a problem.” We’ve got an EXPECTATION GAP. That’s not even close to what I was thinking I’d like to do in you this year. My goal for you is to be perfect – to get rid of lust forever, like never ever again want a woman, money, power, influence again in an improper way. I was kind of thinking perfect trust in my word so that no matter what the WORLD says or what your FEELINGS say or no matter how your CIRCUMSTANCES appear you would never for a second doubt me and you would have PERFECT faith that I will ALWAYS do as I have promised. I was kind of thinking perfect integrity in your speech this year and never again speak a lie. Like ever for the rest of eternity. I was thinking perfect love; the kind of love that gives of self to the point of death on a cross and does so willingly for the joy set before you. I was thinking the kind of prayer that creates a deep relationship such that the thought of sinning is unimaginable because you couldn’t imagine grieving your best friend. Listen, there is almost certainly a GAP between your expectation for your growth as a Christian and God’s expectations for you.
