We have been journeying through the book of Mark and we’ve covered a lot of territory. We’ve talked about harmonies of the gospels, we’ve talked about creeds, the nature of Christ, miracles. All sorts of deep topics and we’ve only had a chance to brush the surface on these. And many of you have sent me follow up emails and asked questions and I’ve been happy to do that. But we had the thought, “I bet there are others that have the same questions.” If there are questions you have that you’d love to ask we now have public a venue to do that. We are starting a Q&A midweek video that will be sent out in the newsletter and social media. The idea is if you have questions about the sermon that you want answered, just navigate to this website and fill out the form. I’ll take those questions and with the help of Jonathan as our host and our great video editing team, we’ll develop some response videos and post them. Background In my office I have a set of books called the Great Books of Western Civilization. Here’s what this set of books looks like. What these editors did was compile into about 60 volumes the greatest works of literature ever created in the Western World from plato to the present. It really was a herculean effort. Now the first two books in the series are called the synopticon and they are distinguished from all other books in that they are the most expensive two volume index ever created. These two volumes were originally produced in 1950 and required 400,000 hours of reading and cost about 2 million dollars to produce. What these two volumes do is categorize all the other volumes into 102 great ideas. Here are some of these great ideas: Happiness. Good and evil. Honor. Immortality. Justice. Judgment. Infinity. Life and Death. Desire. Change. Beauty. Pleasure and Pain. Sin. Soul. Reasoning. Will. Time. Truth and more. And this gets to why I have these books on my shelf. These authors are from all parts of the world. Most of the authors are not Christian. They have massively different backgrounds and educations. But despite the diversity these are the enduring themes that humanity wants to write about. I have these books on my shelf to pull my head out of this tiny little space/time slice here in a building in Houston and remind me that all humans in all places of all times have been motivated by the same basic things. All these books are part of what is called “The Great Conversation.” There’s this great conversation that’s been going on for the past several millennia trying to get at what does this all mean?
