The Anointing at Bethany Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download There’s a show that I watched when I was a kid that was called the antique roadshow. And on the show people come to these antique dealers with old items that they either found at a garage sale or were handed down to them. And they don’t know what they are worth. And these expert antique estimators would talk about their items. Sometimes the things they thought were treasures were trash and Sometimes the things they thought were trash were treasure. So it was fun because you never knew. I remember this one show where there was this blanket. And I thought to myself. Wow, a blanket. You couldn’t pay me to put that ugly thing in my house. Not big enough for my needs. Now everybody who watches the show likes to try and guess the value before it’s revealed. I said, “maybe $200 bucks” And the antique specialist said, “This is one of the most valuable things we’ve ever had on the show. It’s a Navajo Ute First Phase Blanket. Conservatively this is worth probably 1-2M dollars. And I thought. Wow. I was way off. I would have literally thrown it in the dumpster and in so doing I would have thrown away more than my net worth. My eyes couldn’t see it’s value. My perception of the value of that blanket and the actual value were two very different things. Now in a very similar way, one of the main points of Mark chapter 14 is that when it comes to evaluating the worth of Jesus Christ, everyone is way off. EVERYONE is like, way, way off. The perception of the value of Jesus Christ and the actual value are DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT. That delta is massive. So our goal today is to close that gap. This is absolutely personally. Each person here this morning must deal with this question: What is Jesus Christ worth to you? And even in this room, just like in this story, the answers will be all over the map. Let’s start with Mary. Now, we are going to start out in Matthew because Matthew alone records a few key details we don’t get in Mark. So Matthew’s telling begins like this: Matthew 26:1 When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples,” When he had finished WHAT SAYINGS? What sayings are we talking about here? The Olivet Discourse! Grab the emotional context of the disciples. It’s so hard for us to remember this because we know the end of the story. We’ve made this point several times, so I won’t belabor it. Just remember, prior to the olivet discourse, the disciples were on cloud 9. They watched a million people welcome him as Messiah. They watched Jesus drive out the money changers and cleanse the temple They watched Jesus silence his enemies in open debate. Woe to you Scribes and Pharisees Look at these stones and this temple! The kingdom of heaven is imminent. Heaven is about to…
