The Call to Lead the Church Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download We are back into our study of 1 Timothy I want to begin this morning by showing you a picture from the 1940s. This is the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in the pudget sound in Washington. I know this area well because this is where my dad grew up. Now this bridge was built like any other bridge is built. A team of lead engineers put together a design. They test their design. They do a cost analysis on the design. And then they PASS THAT DESIGN ONTO project managers who start working off the plans. And the swarms of contractors descend on the site: – The surveyors – The rebar guys – the electricians And they are all working off the plans given to them by the engineers. Well this particular bridge had a very serious flaw. On this day there were 40mph winds that caused the bridge to twist and oscillate. These oscillations amplified through a feedback loop called AEROELASTIC flutter and it resulted in this violent twisting and catastrophic failure. This should not have happened. This was a VERY SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW. Now here’s the question. Whose fault was this? Who gets blamed for this? There’s one answer: The engineers. All the fault, all the blame, all the fingers point back in the same direction: straight to the engineers. What this means is: No matter how well the steel was made, no matter how structurally sound the concrete, no matter how well the workers secured the rivets, they were only as good as the plans they held in their hands. The final product, the quality of that product was out of their control. The leaders held all the cards. The leaders were responsible. The leaders controlled the outcome. Or to say it another way. “The people cannot rise above their leaders.” Good presidents; good countries. Bad presidents; bad countries. Good teachers; good students. Bad teachers; bad students. Good parents, good kids. Bad parents; bad kids. Leadership is so important. Without leadership, the people flounder. And it’s the same in the church. Good elders; good church. Bad elders; bad church. Now Paul in chapter 2 has given us instruction on how we are to conduct ourselves in the household of God. He’s told us how we should prepare for worship. He’s given instruction on the proper roles of men and women in the church and we spent a few week talking about that. And by the way, if you haven’t seen it in our newsletter for the past two weeks, we have published the paper we promised that is now available online and some paper copies in the foyer on practical application of how men and women compliment one another in using their gifts in the church. So that was chapter 2; now as we turn the page into chapter 3 Paul is going to instruct us on the importance of leadership. In…
