The First Fellowship: When God Builds a Church The First Fellowship: When God Builds a Church When I was a very young kid, maybe 8-10 years old, I remember wanting to buy my mom something special for her birthday. So I rounded up what little money I had and I rode my bike five miles to the store. And I remember going through this really antique store and trying to find the perfect gift and there was this really old cook book and so I bought it and I took it home and wrapped it up. And I remember being so EXCITED to give it to her. She could tell I was excited to give it to her. This was the first gift I had ever given on my own initiative. And I remember so distinctly her opening that present up expecting to see this gigantic smile and her face falling just a little bit in disappointment. And I remember her saying to me so kindly, "Jason, thank you for the gift. But just so you know in the future, I don't like cooking." And it was such a confusing moment to me as a kid because I loved her cooking. How could she not like what I liked so much. What her cooking did for me was amazing. I was so thankful for her cooking. From my perspective, everything here had the setup for a perfect gift. I'm giving her a gift that meant a lot to me. The gift came at great sacrifice to me. In terms of my net worth at the time, I think this was around 50% It was a surprise. It made me feel amazing to give it. we I thought she would love it. But the reality is I was thinking of this only in terms of what the gift would do for me. The reality is my mom hated to cook and the only reason she did it was to silence us 3 boys that constantly complained that we were starving. The last thing she ever wanted to do was to be in the kitchen. A cookbook was not a gift. So what was the lesson to my 8 year old brain? In order to give a gift that is loved and appreciated, it has to be according to the terms of the one who is receiving the gift. I can't give on my terms. I have to give on their terms. It has to be about who they are and what they want. It has to be for the purpose of delighting THEM. It's easy to see this from an 8 year old boy to his mom, but we would do well to stop and apply this same principle to God and our WORSHIP of Him. Because if our WORSHIP is to be true WORSHIP then in MUST BE PRIMARILY about God. It has to do with us but it's not ABOUT us. It's ABOUT God and who HE is what HE wants. We have to worship God on HIS terms and what HE has said is appropriate and right and good. WE might like fast music with drums and lights, but that is NOT really relevant. The question is what God want? We might like slow music with hymns and Elizabethan English but that is NOT the question. The question is does God? We need to ask ourselves, is our worship to God like me giving…
