The Future Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download Introduction We come to our final week in our theology matters series. Now our final message will be on eschatology. The word eschatology comes from the Greek words eschatos which means Last. So eschatology is the study of last things. What happens in the end? How does this whole drama we call history wind down and resolve? When it comes to what the Bible says about end times, Christians tend to fall into one of two categories. Either they overemphasize it or they under-emphasize it. And usually these two groups don’t get along very well. Those who overemphasize tend to spend all sorts of time studying it, walk around with a superiority complex at how well-informed they are and they are sort of spring-loaded to pounce on the simple minded Christians who are not conversant in all these details or have a different view. On the other hand, you have those who tend to react against this overly confident articulation and are annoyed at the misplaced importance that is placed on a secondary doctrine. And maybe they are not as gifted in handling all the intellectual complexity so they often times just give up and feel like humility is to say it’s unknowable. Neither are correct. You know you are applying the doctrine of last things properly when you experience the blessing of happiness. The goal of today’s message is of course to communicate our teaching position but it’s way more than that. The goal of today is to make us so, so happy about the certain future promises of God. Oh, happy day! The Big Picture Let’s start with the big picture. The big picture that every Christian who takes God’s Word at face value will agree that Christ is coming back. Christ’s second coming is the resolution of his first coming which is the resolution of this one giant drama that’s been unfolding since Genesis chapter 1. Everything is being restored. The story line of the Bible is not beginning middle end. It’s beginning middle beginning. God is in the business of restoration. So here’s the big picture. The church awaits the personal, bodily return of our Lord Jesus Christ. That is the prize. That’s the treasure. That’s the good news. You see a lot of people think the good news is something else. Is the good n…
