The Gift of Good Things Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download Introduction Welcome to Cypress Bible Church! My name is Jason, its good to be back. Some have asked why I was gone for the last two weeks. There’s two answers to that: First, I’ve been given a break to work on my schooling. As a heads up I’ll have another break in December. Second, even if I wasn’t doing school, we would still plan these sorts of rotations. I have been given the primary role to teach on Sunday morning here, but we firmly believe that there is value in have many use their gifts in this way. So expect that in our preaching rotation. It’s part of our intentional plan. Our general rhythm is about 6-8 weeks with me on and then we have one of our other pastors or elders teach or sometimes a missionary and then I’ll be back on. Thanksgiving This week happens to be Thanksgiving week. We associate Thanksgiving with a meal, with a feast. A feast is a perfect analogy for what we want to talk about in the passage today. Imagine arriving at a thanksgiving celebration this week. And you step into this beautiful home and there’s a little receiving room. And that’s where you put your coats and shoes and your starving. You haven’t eaten all day in anticipation of this. And then you look over next to the door that leads into the main room and you see a veggie tray. And so your starving so you reach over and you start nibbling on the celery. And you are hungry, and that awakens something in you, then you take another and you start plowing into this celery tray. And the host comes out and says, wait, what are you doing? There’s a feast inside. He says, I’m glad you like the celery but this is not the meal. The feast is in the next room – the turkey, HAM, tenderloin, Brisket, all the toppings and fixings and sauces and pies and cookies and ciders and coffee and its all there. And its made by master chefs. They’ve taken weeks to prepare. Come on in! But you say, “No, I’m good. I’m really hungry and this is good celery.” If that was your response to the host, that host would have every right to turn to you and say, “Bro, something’s wrong with you.” Why would you waste your appetite on a Kroger veggie tray when then there’s a feast inside? The main point of the sermon today is that God, through Christ Jesus, has laid out for us a feast. And it’s a feast like no other feast. Rich foods, great drinks, wonderful desserts. But we, because we are wrapped up in this world, are infatuated with celery. We are running after money and settling for garnish. And Paul’s whole point in this passage is this: Why would you waste your appetite on that when there is a feast inside? There’s a banquet. There’s LIFE. CBC, our ambitions as Christians are far, far, too low. If you find you…
