The Good Confession of Jesus Christ Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download We have tracing the footsteps of Jesus on his way to the cross for the last year and a half and our study ends with the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday next week. We have been going chapter by chapter, verse by verse, line by line through the book and for us the triumphal entry was months ago. And so as is our custom we are just going to move forward and take the next section. So today we come to Jesus before Pilate. I want to begin by having us turn to 1 Timothy chapter 6. This is such an interesting text. This is Paul writing to his friend and fellow laborer in the gospel, Timothy, and encouraging him in the difficult work of pastoral ministry. *Start in verse 12 and notice how Paul is encouraging Timothy, 1 Timothy 6:13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession,” You, Timothy, made a good confession in from of many witnesses just like Jesus made a good confession before Pontius Pilate. Apparently, the early church spent a lot of time thinking about Jesus and his testimony before Pilate. Paul is saying to Timothy, press yourself into the mold of Jesus Christ. There is something to be learned here. Be a confessor the way that Jesus was. So what is that good confession? That’s what we have come to study this morning. Review Now remember last week Jesus was arrested in the Garden sometime after midnight and then went through 3 Jewish trials: Keep in mind ALL three of these Jewish trials, Annas, Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin take place in the middle of the night. Why in the middle of the night? Because they were very anxious to get Jesus on a cross quickly. Why were the Jews so hasty to get Jesus on the cross? There are two reasons. They feared the people. Luke 20:19 and Luke 22:2 both state explicitly that the Pharisees and Sadducees wanted to seize Jesus, but they feared the multitude. They want to get this done as quickly as possible. The city is asleep, and they are afraid that when the city wakes up, the mob that welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem on Sunday will turn AND fight for Jesus now. That’s a legitimate fear. So they work all through the night in these illegal trials to get Jesus tried, sentenced and crucified. that’s the first reason. The second reason they were so anxious to get this done quickly is according to John 19:31 in a ridiculous display of hypocrisy, they want to crucify Jesus and get him off the cross before Sabbath for fear that God will be displeased if a body is on the cross. Well he will be displeased but for an entirely different reason if you know what I mean. So these religious leaders are HIGHLY motivated to get this pushed t…
