One of the things that IKEA is known for is designing their furniture such that a king size bed somehow fits into a shoebox. It’s quite the engineering marvel. But that packaging efficiency comes at a price. You have to assemble it. You know what I’m talking about it. Pins and cams and various lengths of screws and plastic inserts and dowels and pegs and hinges and numbered parts. It’s totally and completely daunting to the point where 85% of furniture bought at IKEA ends up being used like this: Now I’m mechanically inclined so I don’t mind as much. In fact, in my younger years I would look at the instructions and I would think, I know how to put this together, I don’t need instructions. The instructions insulted me. And so the first thing I’d do when I opened the box was to throw away the instructions. And inevitably what would happen is I would get about 15 steps into it so confident that I was so smart and then I’d realize that even though the piece LOOKED symmetrical there was this tiny little hole that I didn’t notice and that hole was supposed to be on the bottom but it turns out it was actually on the top and now the whole thing doesn’t work. I’d have to backup and unassemble it back 12 steps and start over. Now, I’ve learned. I don’t even guess. I don’t even try. I just pour out the package and fold out the instructions and I just say to that piece of paper, “Command me.” And look for the little numbers and pay very close attention to every detail. I don’t even attempt to wonder what this little piece is supposed to do. I just know that if I follow the instructions exactly 10 times out of 10 the results are perfect. I’ve learned that even though I think I can anticipate every problem and scenario, there’s always some tiny little gotcha that has catastrophic consequences. There’s always this little detail that can’t be known at the early stages that reveals itself in the later stages and that little detail turns out to be soul-crushingly significant. I’ve learned that there’s hidden design features that are ingenious that can’t be known at the front end but are revealed when the whole thing comes together. I’ve learned to trust that the designer knows what he’s doing and his instructions are for my benefit not to limit me or insult my intelligence. A New Study of 1 Timothy Well today we begin a brand new study in the book of 1 Timothy which we are entitling “God’s Blueprint for a Healthy Church.” The book of 1 Timothy in many ways is like a manual, a blueprint, a schematic for how a church should be assembled. What are blueprints for? Why do we need a blue…
