The Person of the Son Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download We are in a 12 week series on theology where week by week we are introducing our new doctrinal statement phrase by phrase. And today we come to the person of the Son, the second person of the trinity. Today we are asking the question, who is Jesus? ##$ The Person of Jesus Christ Obviously there are a lot of opinions on that question. One thing for certain is that they can’t all be right. The only possible way to answer that question, is to look into this book that is written about him and determine if what he says about himself and what others say about him is true. Most of what is said in these videos indicates common cultural perceptions but a tremendous ignorance of this book. What we want to do is make clear statements about what this book says. We are NOT trying to answer all theological questions and put an end to mystery. By no means. By nature of what we are studying we expect mystery. But that doesn’t mean we have to throw our hands up in the air and say we can’t know. There are clear definitive things we can say that place boundaries on the possible conclusions about who Jesus is. So our doctrinal statement defines the walls and gives us a room in which our thoughts about God can bounce around. So who is the real Jesus? So let’s consider what the Scriptures say. Our doctrinal statement begins this way. Jesus Christ was always with God, is God, and existed before all things. We begin by affirming that before Jesus became a man and walked upon the earth, He was already in existence as the second Person of the triune God. Many people in the video thought that Jesus was just a normal guy. But that’s not what he claimed nor what others in the Bible said about him. He claimed to be God come down from heaven. Immanuel – God with us. Probably the clearest text that makes this point explicitly is John 17:5. This is Jesus contemplating his death and his future glorification says this. Jesus is claiming to have knowledge of his glorified existence with God before the world existed. What man can say that? Can you imagine if a pastor prayed that on Sunday morning? That guy who be put in a white coat and hauled off to some padded room. Men don’t pray prayers like that. In John 3 Jesus talking to Nicodemus says. John 3:13, “No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.” Again, retrain your brain to hear the phrase, “Son of Man” the way a 1st century Jew would have heard. We hear, “Jesus is a son of man.” That’s so humble of him. Me too, I’m a son of man. No, no. That’s Jesus referencing Daniel 7, that figure who speaks to the Ancient of Days. That’s Jesus taking unto himself that title reserved for this divine figure. Jesus said, I’m the Son…
