The Power of Testimony Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download The human being is complex. And the way to demonstrate that is to observe emotions. Emotions are surface indicators of things that are deep, deep down within us. There are things that are happening below the consciousness that surface in emotions and cannot be easily changed. For example, let me give the men in the room a little marriage tip: If your wife is expressing some level of anxiety, if she’s worried about something, here’s basically the least helpful thing in the world to say: “honey, don’t worry.” Oh that helps. I hadn’t thought of that. Or wives if your husband is frustrated about something and he’s just stewing on something, it really doesn’t help to say: “babe, just relax.” We can’t just tell other people to feel a certain way. There are deep beliefs and deep convictions that have to be rearranged in the subterranian chambers of our souls to actually feel differently. Now here’s why we are saying this. We are in a study of 1 Timothy where Paul is instructing Timothy on how we are to conduct ourselves in the household of God. And he’s warning Timothy about common ways the church can get off course. And you want to know what a HUGE danger is for any church? Losing the awe and wonder that you have been saved by Jesus Christ. And maybe you are here today and you have lost that awe. You’re passion has flickered out. And you know it’s gone. You know what it used to feel like, but instead of that fire, your soul is cold and lifeless. You know it’s true of you. You don’t like it. But how do you recapture it? I can’t just say, Be filled with awe. Ready, set, WONDER! How do we fix that problem? You want to know what one of the best ways we can recapture that awe? Let me tell you. I used to work for the forest service as a firefighter. And one of the most fun parts was at the end of the season, the logging teams who had been cutting down trees all year long would pile up their slash piles, all these branches and limbs and unusable lumber into these giant piles. And then we would soak them with 3 parts diesel 1 part gas. Like drench it. And then we’d tie a flare onto an arrow and shoot that right into the pile. And I’m telling you, that was fun. People would just come out to watch this fire burn for weeks. The flames just leaping into the sky a hundred feet. It was truly spectacular. There’s something that draws us to watch something burn. How do we reclaim gospel awe? One of the easiest ways is to just watch someone else burn with it? It’s contagious. It spreads. That’s why we worship every week together as a body. Your passion and my passion and her passion intensifies the heat and DOES TOGETHER what we could never do apart. And that’s what we see in the text today. The apostle…
