The Power of Truth Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download So we are in the book of 1 Timothy and today’s passage is about how God uses the church to be a messenger of truth to the world. As Pilate famously said, “What is Truth?” Now truth is an interesting thing. In fact it’s not really even a thing. It’s a way of describing whether or not a person’s mental framework lines up with reality or not. In the early 20th century, tobacco companies and even some doctors claimed smoking soothed nerves, aided digestion, or cured ailments. You can believe that but it’s not true because it doesn’t line up with reality. If what you believe in your head aligns with the way things actually are, then you believe the truth. If what you believe in your head does not align with the way things actually are, then you believe something false. But sometimes it’s hard to determine the truth. There are many TRUTH claims. We live in a pluralistic society where there is not agreement on what that truth is. And so life is really a journey of trying to come to a knowledge of the truth. What is real? What is objective reality? What is verifiable fact? What is not true? We are all on a quest. And this is no small quest. This is no small mission. Why? Because there are incredibly significant consequences for believing something that is true or believing something that is false. For example, if you believe there is no train coming and there is a train coming, that’s a pretty big deal. **The difference between standing on a train or standing on in front of a train, is a pretty big difference. Same power. The only difference is how you relate to it. Truth is like that. It doesn’t care. If you are on the side of truth it will serve you so tremendously. If you are against truth it will destroy you. So how do we relate with truth? So Paul is going to explain today how to get on the right side of truth. First we must live in accordance with truth. This is the difference between standing on the train or in front of the train. Now in the example of the train, being in the way of truth or on the side of truth is obvious. But other things are less obvious. Especially as it relates to the church. For example, how do we raise or educate our kids, how to we structure leadership, should we have family integrated services stage of life ministries? What should worship look like? Are these just preferences? Are there truths that transcend that ought to be applied to the way we do things? Is there a best way? What are the truth claims that transcend preferences and what are things that are merely principals and we need wisdom to apply? We actually need help. And Paul is giving that help. 1 Timothy 3:14 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that,” Anytime you see…
