Today, 2.3 billion people around the world—in over 200 nations and on every continent—will gather to sing about and worship a first-century Galilean peasant who was executed along with two thieves in Roman-occupied Jerusalem. From cathedrals in Madrid to house churches in China, from Korean megachurches to tiny congregations in the Yukon Believers of every conceivable background will gather to confess a singular creed: the lowly Jesus of Nazareth was in fact God in the flesh he defied the laws of nature rose from the dead, and he offers eternal life to all who confess him as their Lord and Savior. That is the claim that we consider today. But is this historical fact? Is this history? There cannot be a more important question. I’m going to slightly modify a famous quote by C.S. Lewis. The Mazda Let me explain why that is true by telling you a story. When I was in college I owned a 1986 a Mazada 323. I loved this car. It wasn’t a looker by any means, but I loved it. One day I discovered a three foot snake had crawled into my car and before I could grab it, it slithered up the heater vent in the floor and disappeared. So I thought, man, that’s so lame. I said to myself, he’s got to come out at some point. I couldn’t do anything, so I just waited. Now I didn’t have to wonder where the snake went because about two weeks later I noticed a smell. And I’m not talking about a mild odor. This was vile. Like eye watering, dry heaving, vile. Now I tried to cover up the odor and here’s what I learned. There isn’t a little Christmas tree air freshener in the world that can do anything to make DEATH and DECAY smell like anything except PERFUMED death and decay. You know the smell I’m talking about. I mean there’s nothing like that smell. It’s primal. It shuts down your appetite. Now, here’s where I’m going with all this. That smell is not limited to snakes. In fact, there’s a story in the Bible in John chapter 11 where Jesus’ friend Lazarus has died and he’s been four days dead in the tomb. And Jesus says, “Roll away the Stone.” And Martha objects. Jesus we can’t do that because by now there’s a stench. That smell is the smell of death. Nobody likes the thought of THAT happening to THEM. The reality is that death comes to 100% of the population. 100% of us will die. Is there anything we can do about it? Listen to what Jesus said to Mary about his friend Lazarus. John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”” Jesus Christ came to solve the DEATH problem. This is the grand daddy of problems. You might not feel it…
