The Scriptures Slideshow for this message PDF Message Download Today we are going to begin a new series entitled, Theology Matters. What is theology? Theology is simply the study of God and things related to God. So for the next 12 weeks we are going to survey the major branches of theology in the Bible. So the format of this series will be different than our study of Mark, rather than go verse by verse through a single text, we are attempting to put together into succinct statements all of what the Bible says about a particular subject and we’ll be jumping around a bit more than normal. There are several reasons we think this series is important UNITY. This is a key time in the life of our church to ground us and create unity around the fundamentals of what we believe. What better way to grow as a church and create unity as a church then to collectively study what God tells us is true. When we finish this series we will have 12 sermons which will be an enduring resource for the church to ground us theologically. PROTECTION. One of the main jobs of the elders as outlined in Acts 20 is to guard the doctrine of the church. This is important not just on Sunday morning but in all teaching environments in the church. In today’s culture it is not popular to be against anything unless it’s blatantly immoral or illegal. Even then, we sometimes hear: who are you to be against something that doesn’t hurt anyone? So we feel the pressure not to be against people’s beliefs. And yet, as a Bible-believing Christians, how we can escape it? We cannot be for everything that goes under the label Christian. Some things people call Christian just can’t be if the Bible is our guide. It really is that simple. Of course that is not popular. But our job as Christians is not to be popular. Christianity as a label is massively diverse and just because it claims to be Christian doesn’t mean it is. Anything that is compatible with everything is nothing. If Christianity is to mean something, it has to have some shape, and sharp edges and boundaries. Which means that when someone says something that is clearly contrary to the Bible it’s not just someone’s different opinion. It’s right to say that it’s wrong. CLARITY. We mentioned in our family meeting the elders have put a lot of effort in updating our doctrinal statement. The main goal of that effort was to increase clarity. There are no positions that have changed from our former statement; however, we have added specificity to certain doct…
