Mark 14:12-16 · Jesus' Passion. The Three Passovers — sermon from Cypress Bible Church on BibleSlides.
The Three Passovers Mark 14:12-26 The Three Passovers INTRODUCTION As many of you might already know, I come from a broken family. And what hurt me most was not that my parents were divorced, what hurt most was that my father was absent. The feeling of abandonment led me to humiliate my father in front of his family. It was so bad that I felt that nothing would redeem our relationship. I thought I would never see him again. Almost four years later, I married Uba, and several years after that Uba and I were raising our four children. And one day my wife approached me and asked if I would be ok with allowing my father back into my life for the sake of our children. You see, our children had their grandmothers, but one of their grandfathers lives in Mexico, and well there was my situation. They essentially had no grandfathers, and it was affecting them. The last thing I wanted was to be the reason they struggled with similar hurts that I struggled with growing up: so, for their sake I allowed my father back into my life. Little did I know this would change my life. After having returned from Afghanistan, the Lord began to restore my life, and it was during this time that I realized my need to forgive my father and to redeem our broken relationship. I shared my hurt with him and him with me. I forgave him. He forgave me. I told him I loved him, and he told me he loved me. And while I pray for his salvation, I’m so happy to have my dad in my life. It seems to me that stories of redeemed relationships are impactful because we intuitively know of our greater need of being restored unto God. And the Scriptures tell us of how God has worked in redeeming sinners unto Himself. In Mark 14:12-26, we have something special in the narrative of redemptive history. Last week we left with difficult words which narrated Judas’s premeditated betrayal. But Mark wrote the following fifteen verses to leave us in awe of how God throughout history is working to redeem sinners to himself. As we explore these verses, my hope is that God would place in your hearts as he has in mine, wonder and awe as we observe the scarlet thread of redemption from the First Passover, to the New Passover, and eventually to the Future Passover. THE FIRST PASSOVER Mark provides the timing of our passage. Mark wrote, “And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb.” This was on Thursday after what is traditionally called silent Wednesday. On the evening of this day the Jews celebrated the festival that was and remains to be the highlight of the Jewish faith. It is their most important festival because it commemorates the passing over of God’s judgment, the liberation of Israel from Egypt, and the redemption of a people unto God. Historical and Cultural Context Wha…
