Good Friday. Rejecting the Stone. (1 Peter 2:4-8; Matthew 27:45-54). Good Friday. Rejecting the Stone. (1 Peter 2:4-8; Matthew 27:45-54). Good Friday Well we are looking and the imagery of Jesus Christ as the cornerstone. On Palm Sunday we looked at laying the stone. This was Jesus Christ offering himself as King to the nation. And as Jesus came riding into Jerusalem the Pharisees screamed at Jesus, silence the crowds but Jesus cried out, if these were silent the rocks would cry out. Why? Because the King was coming to his city. But the King was Rejected. They welcomed him on Sunday but he was on the cross by Friday. And so tonight, on Good Friday we want to see how it was the stone was rejected by the builders. And then of course on Easter Sunday we will look at EXALTING THE STONE. We want to begin this evening's journey in gethsemene. And let me set the scene. The disciples and Jesus are in the upper room eating the passover meal. They are working through the various elements of that meal. And at one point in the meal, about halfway through, Judas steals away under pretence of taking care of some buisness. And it is a that exact moment that Jesus gathers up his disciples and heads to the Garden of Gethsemane. He leaves midmeal. In the Jewish passover, there are four cups. And almost certainly Jesus drinks the cup of redemption and leaves the cup of blessing. That cup he said he would not drink again until he does so in the kingdom. So they leave the upper room. Now it's at this moment that Judas Iscariot leads a detachment of soldiers and temple guards. Jesus identifies himself, and after a brief struggle where Peter cuts off a servant’s ear, Jesus heals the man and submits to arrest. He is first taken to Annas , the former High Priest, then to the current High Priest, Caiaphas . Throughout the night, the Sanhedrin (the Jewish council) seeks testimony against him. Eventually, when Jesus affirms he is the Messiah and the Son of God, the council convicts him of blasphemy. During these proceedings, Peter denies knowing Jesus three times, fulfilling Jesus' earlier prophecy. Because the Jewish leaders lacked the authority to carry out an execution, they take Jesus to the Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate , early in the morning. Pilate finds no legal grounds for a death sentence. Upon learning Jesus is from Galilee, he sends him to Herod Antipas , who is in Jerusalem for the feast. Herod mocks Jesus and sends him back to Pilate. Pilate attempts to release Jesus by offering a choice between him and a notorious prisoner named Barabbas. The crowd, stirred by the chief priests, demands Barabbas’ release and Jesus’ crucifixion. To appease the crowd and prevent a riot, Pilate washes his hands of the matter and hands Jesus over to be flogged and executed. The Roma…
